Four people in California have been arrested for having a friend dress up as a bear and scratch up their vehicles as part of the dumbest insurance fraud scheme we’ve ever seen. It’s seriously like something out of a 90s sitcom plot, yet this is real life in the Golden State.
California Highway Patrol is going electric.
According to the California Department of Insurance, those four suspects have been charged not only with insurance fraud but also conspiracy. Home surveillance footage shows the supposed bear attacks, which absolutely looks like some guy dressed up in a costume, just like every Bigfoot sighting.
What’s also so dumb about this crime is each of the vehicles appears to have been parked in the same spot during the attacks. What are the chances a bear would return to the same house and open up and unlocked vehicle sitting in the same spot over and over? Gee, we wonder what sparked this investigation.
Also, the surveillance camera appears to move ever so slightly throughout the different attacks, almost like it’s being held by someone. Everything about the footage is just off.
We’ve seen legitimate cases of bears entering unlocked vehicles and trashing them. The resulting damage is amazing, showcasing the strength of the majestic creatures. The damage shown in the California Department of Insurance video we’ve shared is pathetic in comparison.
In an official press release, the California Department of Insurance says three vehicles were used to file claims through three separate insurance companies. The vehicles involved were a 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost, 2015 Merecedes-Benz G63 AMG, and 2022 Mercedes-Benz E350. All three alleged attacks took place in Lake Arrowhead.
The investigation was called Operation Bear Claw, proving officials have a sense of humor. They would have to after dealing with such stupid criminals, otherwise investigators would probably lose their minds from realizing such stupidity walks among us.
While officials had a biologist from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife look at the video footage to substantiate their suspicion this was a guy in a bear suit, the final nail in the coffin was securing a search warrant. That turned up the pictured costume and fake claws.
In total, these four people defrauded $141,839 out of the three insurance companies. They probably thought they pulled a fast one, too.
