Cadillac XT4 to Die So That the Next-Gen Chevy Bolt EV Can Live
Cadillac is killing off the XT4 subcompact luxury SUV.
The XT4 will end production in January 2025.
The move will make way for the upcoming Chevrolet Bolt EV, which is returning for its second generation.
After a seven model-year run, Cadillac's smallest SUV will reach the end of the line. Cadillac has confirmed to C/D that it plans to end production of the XT4 in January 2025 at General Motors' Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City, Kansas. The move comes as GM prepares to shift production at this facility to the upcoming second-generation Chevrolet Bolt EV, scheduled to start production in 2025. (The Fairfax plant also previously built the Chevrolet Malibu sedan, which ended production this month.)
This means that 2025 will be the final model year for the XT4 in the U.S. A subcompact luxury SUV, the XT4 sold a not insignificant 15,688 units through the first three quarters of 2024. It's not clear if Cadillac plans to replace the XT4 eventually with another small-SUV model produced elsewhere, but in the meantime the lower end of its crossover lineup will now be occupied by the XT5 and the new electric Optiq, which are both compact luxury SUVs.
Besides its production location and the fact that it will use GM's latest battery technology, we don't know much about the upcoming Chevrolet Bolt EV. It's set to arrive sometime in 2025, and we can assume it will be an affordable electric hatchback to replace the outgoing Bolt EV and Bolt EUV that were discontinued after the 2023 model year.
The Bolt EV was a strong seller for GM even late into its life cycle. It's clear that the company has high sales hopes for the new model given that it is dedicating this entire production facility to the new model. We look forward to hearing more about the second-gen Bolt EV soon.
