Austin Prock Is First to Break 340 MPH Barrier in NHRA Funny Car Event
Bob Tasca was the first ever to top the 340-mph barrier, but it wasn’t an official NHRA mark because he clocked the time in March at an exhibition race at Bradenton, Fla., and not at an NHRA-sanctioned event.
The accomplishment was the talk of the first half of the season, and he so had wanted to do it again and get his name in the record book for that. No one could do it—until the first round of Funny Car eliminations.
Austin Prock added that feather to his already decorated cap, beating Jason Rupert with a 341.68-mph speed. Understated dad and crew chief Jimmy Prock deadpanned, “I didn’t expect that.” But Austin Prock wasn’t shy.
He said, “It’s a testament to how great this team is. Right when you think we’re done, we just keep one-upping everyone. It's such a fun car to drive. I’m getting pretty comfortable in this Chevrolet, definitely catching up to this Funny Car. Going to keep getting better and better.”
