The Blue Oval is no strangers to the ever-growing market for off-road-focused vehicles. With the debut of the all-new 2025 Ford Expedition, the brand is leaning into its 4x4 success by adding an all-new Tremor model to the mix. Here’s everything you need to know about the tech-filled fifth-generation Expedition.

The 2025 model year brings the first new take on the Expedition since the current model’s 2018 debut, but there’s still a lot of familiar hardware to be found. The chassis and powertrain are updated variants of the existing units, and still are shared with the F-150 pickup. Every Expedition will come equipped with a version of the 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6, though two output levels are on offer: the standard motor provides 400 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque, whereas the High Output model makes 440 hp and 510 lb-ft. Only the Tremor gets the full-fat engine as standard equipment.

That power is routed through a 10-speed automatic transmission, with rear-wheel drive as standard except on Active, King Ranch, and Platinum trims. Four-wheel drive is optional across the entire lineup, but comes as standard with the off-road-focused Tremor. Both axles use an independent suspension setup, with wheel sizes ranging from 18 inches to a monstrous 24, depending on trim and package.

The entire Expedition lineup benefits from new fascias front and rear, complete with revised lighting that enhances the wide look of the SUV. The wraparound LEDs serve as the new identifier on the Expedition, though we’re still not sold on the change. The rear end picks up a split tailgate design for 2025, which brings added functionality to the truck; it should prove particularly popular with the tailgating crowd, as Ford designed the piece to serve as everything from a two-tiered buffet to a rear-facing bench seat. (We could do without the black two-tone design element, however.)

The rear also houses the obligatory tow hitch, which can support a maximum tow rating of up to 6900 pounds in rear-drive spec. Opt for a 4x4 model, and that figure jumps to an impressive 9600 lbs.

The Tremor picks up a unique front bumper setup with an integrated skid plate, as well as underbody plating protecting important items like the gearbox. The yellow accents mirror the look of the F-150 Tremor, with which the new Expedition model shares many familiar parts. The SUV comes equipped with the same electronic locking rear differential as the F-150, as well as that model’s 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires.

“Expedition is a sibling to F-150,” chief program engineer Adrian Aguirre told Road & Track. “It takes the best of all of that 'Built Ford Tough' that's in that chassis, frame, suspension, all of it, and then you make it incredibly sophisticated and livable for seven or eight passengers."

"We do share a lot in terms of cooling systems, the Raptor-style skid plate on the front, Raptor-inspired running boards, tires straight off of the F-150 Tremor," he added. "So that leaves us in a situation where the number of variables we are contending with when we go and test are fewer.”

The entire suspension system of the Expedition Tremor is unique to that model, with all-new control arms, shocks, springs, and stabilizer bars to increase ground clearance and ride height. Working with the upsized rubber, the Tremor will provide 10.6 inches of ground clearance, which Ford says is best in class. The Tremor also receives a set of upgraded rear half shafts to help cope with the added stress brought on by the electronic limited-slip differential. It’s not as serious of a setup as you might find in some of Ford’s other off-roaders, but that’s by design. Aguirre maintains the truck is more capable than what most owners will actually attempt with such a large machine. The team even took the truck to Dubai for some testing on the uniquely difficult terrain of the Middle East.

“We have gone for, what I would say, is a balanced approach,” said Aguirre. “Expedition is about coming together, not going alone. You want to arrive there at a pace, you don’t want to have to crawl your way through that if you're in a desert environment, for example."

"At the same time, sometimes going to that next level of performance can drive behaviors in the vehicle that make it very uncomfortable for that second and third row. We’ve been very careful to strike a balance where the ride plushness is good enough that everyone is going to arrive and say this was a good experience. But the driver is going to feel that they’ve also had a good time.”

Inside, the Expedition benefits from a massive rework. Gone is the F-150 inspiration, replaced by a much more expressive interior. The dash is entirely new, owing largely to the 24-inch infotainment and cluster display ahead of the driver; Ford has mounted it at the base of the dash instead of ahead of the wheel, which the Blue Oval claims improves outward visibility. (It certainly highlights how much visibility has been robbed by growing hood heights.)

The rear seating has also been adjusted, with a third-row 40-20-40 split allowing for long cargo to travel in the cabin. The oddly-shaped two-spoke steering wheel looks like a possessed T-800 Terminator, which gives it a unique charm.

As ever, the truck comes back by Ford’s suite of active safety features, and will support Blue Cruise hands-free capabilities. Starting in 2025, customers can forgo the brand’s subscription model and purchase Blue Cruise for a one-time fee of $2495.

The order books aren’t open quite yet for the 2025 Ford Expedition lineup, and as such, Ford has yet to share pricing. That said, the list will open on October 24, with deliveries expected to begin in the spring of 2025. Let us know what you think of the updated styling down below.
