Jeep Grand Cherokee L No Longer Comes with a V-8 Jeep
  • Jeep quietly removed the V-8 option from the 2024 Grand Cherokee L, leaving a 293-hp V-6 as the lone engine option.

  • The three-row SUV was previously available with either a V-6 or a 357-hp V-8, which both mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

  • The take rate for the V-8 was under 4 percent, according to a statement to Car and Driver by a Jeep representative.

The three-row Jeep Grand Cherokee L is following in the tire tracks of the Wagoneer twins and the shorter two-row Grand Cherokee by quietly removing the V-8 option from its lineup. In November 2023, Jeep removed the 5.7-liter and 6.4-liter V-8 engines from the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer and 2024 Grand Wagoneer. Now, the Grand Cherokee L is following suit, dropping the V-8 from its options list, and leaving behind the standard V-6.

The 5.7-liter V-8 produced 357 horsepower and could be paired with either rear- or all-wheel drive configurations. Either way, power was routed through an eight-speed automatic, and towing improved to 7200 pounds compared with the V-6's 6200-pound limit.

Now the sole engine choice, the V-6 churns out 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. As with the eight-cylinder, it can be had with rear- or all-wheel drive. It's also possible that Jeep will add the 4xe hybrid system that's available on the tw0-row Grand Cherokee 4xe hybrid model to the three-row model in the future.

A Jeep spokesperson told Car and Driver that the engine was phased out of production in the third (current) quarter of 2024 and that in the last full year of availability, the take rate for the V-8 was under 4 percent.
