The Golden Gophers are 1-1-0 on the season thus far and ranked No. 5 overall in the country. Most recently, Minnesota defeated Air Force 7-1 in its opening game at the Ice Braker Tournament before then falling to No. 15 Omaha 2-1, a matchup that ended in overtime, a disappointing result for a team with such high expectations this season.

Meanwhile, Minnesota-Duluth is 1-2-0 on the season, losing to Bemidji State 4-3 to open its campaign before then defeating UMass Lowell 4-2 last Friday. Minnesota-Duluth then fell 4-1 in the rematch on Saturday night, certainly making the team even hungrier to pull off the upset win on Friday against rival Minnesota.
