Roger Federer 'can't beat Djokovic and Nadal at US Open'

A former tennis player does not believe 20-time Grand Slam champ Roger Federer can take home the trophy at Flushing Meadows because the potential task of defeating Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic back-to-back is too great.

Federer is coming into the US Open after a shock Round of 16 exit to Russian Andrey Rublev at the Cincinnati Masters last week.

The Swiss Maestro has also struggled to run deep into the Flushing Meadows draw for a few years after Australian John Millman knocked out Federer in the Round of 16 in 2018.

His last deep run was in 2015 where he lost to Djokovic in the final.

He hasn’t won the tournament since 2008.

Former British and Canadian player Greg Rusedski said since Federer is seeded third, the possibility of running into both current World No.1 Djokovic and Spaniard Rafael Nadal in back-to-back matches will be too much for the Swiss to overcome.

“He has never beaten them back-to-back so when he had them match points at Wimbledon that would have been the first time he has beaten Nadal and Djokovic back-to-back,” Rusedski told The Express.

“He has never done that in his career.

“Can he have a good run? Yes. Do I think he can win the title? I don’t think so.”

The Canadian picked the top two seeds as favourites for the tournament, but also through in Danni Medvedev in the mix.

Medvedev recently defeated Djokovic and David Goffin on his way to claim his first ATP Masters title at the Cincinnati Masters.
