The heated rivalry between welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington exploded as the pair traded ugly barbs ahead of their rematch on the weekend.

Usman (19-1) and Covington (16-2) share one of the most fierce rivalries in combat sport today, which led to the champion breaking Covington's jaw in his fifth round win back in 2019.

Despite the shattering defeat, Covington wasn't deterred.

The Trump-supporting all-American went on to defeat Tyrone Woodley and waited for his chance to fight the champion in a rematch.

The pair have traded ugly words since the first bout, sparking Covington to claim the champion was ducking him, and it has all built up to this weekend.

And the fighters were able to face-off days before they trade hands and it didn't take long for Covington to get personal with Usman.

Covington referenced Usman's father who has spent time in prison.

“Is your daddy the jailbird coming on Saturday night? I’m going to hook up with law enforcement if you want me to call his parole officer. I’ll make sure he can come on Saturday night,” Covington said.

“I feel so sorry for Mrs. Usman. Think about that, she’s got a cheating son, she’s got a scammer husband, that must be shitty in that household.”

Covington's allegations that Usman has taken performance enhancing drugs is unsubstantiated.

After their last fight, Covington ran out of the ring and didn't acknowledge Usman's victory.

But when Usman was asked if he would shake hands with Covington he fired back and took a dig at the No.1 contender.

"As a competitor, I love what he brings to the table, he pushes me and did last time," Usman said.

"I expect it from him this time.

"But as a person, he is a rotten piece of s**t. And I can't believe his father let him put this persona on."

But Covington retaliated.

"At least my father isn't in prison," Covington replied.

When asked about whether he would shake Usman's hand after the result this weekend, the American declined and called Usman a 'coward'.

UFC president Dana White was forced to intervene when Usman shoved Covington as they came face-to-face.

The build-up to the rematch has many fans predicting an instant classic.

But for all the bad blood between the pair, there will be no where to run come fight night.
