Floyd Mayweather's shock rematch announcement after Conor McGregor win
Conor McGregor picked up his first since win since 2016 on Saturday night, taking out Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in just 40 seconds at UFC 246 in Las Vegas.
Now, it appears that Floyd Mayweather wants to step back into the ring with McGregor.
‘IT’S ALL FAKE’: Stunning allegations of Conor McGregor fight 'fix'
Mayweather posted a photo of the two on Instagram late on Saturday night after McGregor’s win at T-Mobile Arena without comment, hinting at a rematch between the two fighters later this year.
Mayweather — who boasts a perfect 50-0 record — returned to the ring after a two-year break to take on McGregor in Las Vegas in 2017, and won by TKO in the 10th round in what was McGregor’s first official boxing match.
At the time, Mayweather said the bout was his last.
The 42-year-old has said that he wants to come out of retirement in recent months, however, and even posted a picture of him with UFC president Dana White to Instagram late last year announcing that the two are “working together again to bring the world another spectacular event in 2020.”
While a rematch with McGregor would undoubtedly be exciting, Mayweather may have other plans in the works, too.
He posted a similar picture just minutes later with UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov as the opponent.
Either way, it looks like Mayweather may be back in the ring sometime this year. Who stands opposite of him, however, remains to be seen.
Who’s next for McGregor?
As for who he wants to fight next, McGregor said: "Any one of these little mouthy fools can get it. I like this weight division, I feel really good, it's good going up and down.
"God willing I came out of here unscathed, I'm in shape, I don't believe I'm there yet, I've still got work to do to get back to where I was.
"I'm going to party tonight and celebrate, spend time with my family and get back in the gym and train."
McGregor's hand hadn't been raised in victory since November 2016, when he stopped lightweight Eddie Alvarez to become the first fighter in UFC history to hold two championship belts simultaneously.
With his fame and fortune multiplying, McGregor fought only his boxing match with Mayweather in 2017, and he lost a one-sided UFC bout to lightweight champion Nurmagomedov in late 2018.
After a year of inactivity and trouble outside the cage, McGregor vowed to return to elite form in this bout against a fellow UFC veteran and stoppage specialist.
His dramatic victory over Cerrone indicated he's on his way.
Cerrone is the winningest fighter in UFC history with 23 victories inside the octagon, a mark that reflects both his durability and commitment to an uncommonly busy schedule.
McGregor won 15 consecutive fights during a five-year run from low-profile shows in Dublin to the world's biggest MMA events, stopping five straight elite UFC opponents with punches on the way up.
