While golf legend Tiger Woods is a long way off a potential sporting comeback, the 45-year-old reportedly still hopes to play as part of his recovery from a shocking car accident earlier this year.

Woods has been rehabilitating after he suffered serious leg injuries after rolling his car down an embankment in February.

Earlier this week, the United States' Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker said he had been in regular contact with Woods as the gold legend continued his recovery.

While Stricker confirmed that Woods would not be making an appearance at the Ryder Cup as an assistant coach on the team, he was able to shed some more light on his progress.

Stricker told Sirius XM Radio that Woods was doing well and that things are 'moving in the right direction'.

"He's very passionate about (the Ryder Cup). He's a great guy to talk to. He's a great guy to lean on. We've had a number of talks," Stricker said in the interview.

"He's a part of this Ryder Cup family; he won't be able to be a captain's assistant this time around just because of his ongoing rehabilitation to try to get better and try to play golf again, and that is going well.

"He's progressing, he's doing well, things are moving in the right direction."

The last words from Woods publicly about his recovery came in late May when he said he was focused on "walking on my own."

He is recovering from open fractures to his tibia and fibula, which needed a rod inserted to aid healing, and also foot and ankle injuries that needed screws and pins placed to aid in stabilisation.

He was hospitalised for almost a month after the crash.

Woods played three events in the 2020-21 PGA Tour season, most recently the 2020 Masters that was delayed until November, as he was recovering from back surgery.

The Ryder Cup begins September 24.

Tiger Woods sheds walking boot in rare public appearance

Back in May, Woods made a rare public outing in the wake of the accident which left him seriously injured.

He's made social media appearances, including a congratulatory tweet to his old rival Phil Mickelson for his PGA Championship.

But until then, he'd only been known to show himself in public once — an April photo on crutches that he shared on Instagram.

In May, a new photo of Woods surfaced on social media. This one he didn't provide. It was posted on Instagram by 10-year-old athlete Luna Perrone.

Perrone, who writes that she's battling bone cancer, shared a picture of herself alongside Woods in what appears to be a meeting at her soccer game over the weekend.

Perrone's decked out in her soccer gear alongside a smiling Woods on crutches and wearing a compression sleeve over his injured right leg.

He's also shed the walking boot that he was seen wearing on his right leg in his April photo.

Making friends with Tiger Woods is certainly a good move for getting a message out.

As for Woods, his team hasn't provided any medical updates outside of a March tweet announcing that he had returned home from the hospital to continue his recovery.

But his appearance in public without a walking boot looks like a sign that things are progressing in the right direction.
