Aussie golfing great Greg Norman has raised eyebrows in congratulating Cameron Smith after the Queenslander won the 150th British Open in a dramatic fightback.

Smith wrote his name into Australian sporting folklore on Sunday with a spectacular back nine to win the landmark 150th Open Championship.

SO SAD: Tiger Woods reduced to tears in devastating scenes

With five successive birdies to start the back nine, Smith chased down home hope Rory McIlroy to become the first Australian to claim the famous Claret Jug since Norman at Royal St George's in 1993.

And Norman - who has headed the controversial LIV Golf revolution - was quick to congratulate the Aussie.

"Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi! A spectacular final round mate," Norman said.

"A triumph for you and for Australia as the first Australian to win in 29 years.

"You’re in good company. Enjoy every moment of your The Open victory."

Norman was not invited to the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the British Open due to the distraction of LIV Golf.

Norman won the British Open twice, which would have seen him return to play at the Celebration of Champions.

However, the R&A informed Norman they didn't want any unwelcome distractions and did not invite the Australian to the event.

Cameron Smith shuts down LIV Golf question

Norman's message to Smith comes after the Australian golf star quickly shut down questions about his potential defection to LIV Golf in the moments after his victory.

Having just become the fifth Australian to ever win the Claret Jug, Smith faced the media to talk about his historic triumph.

But questions in his post-round press conference inevitably turned to reports he's set to join Norman's controversial series.

LIV Golf have been accused of using the series as a form of 'sportswashing' for Saudi Arabia - who have thrown a reported $3 billion into the venture.

And a reporter told the British Open winner his name had been mentioned as a potential star to join Norman's group, to which Smith said: "I just won the British Open and you’re asking about that? I think that’s, pretty, not that good."

When pressed further on his plans going forward, Smith added: “I don’t know, mate. My team around me worries about all that stuff. I’m here to win golf tournaments.”

While Smith made no suggestion he was joining LIV Golf, the fact he didn't flat out deny the speculation did raise some eyebrows.

Not long after the victory, reports suggest the Australian is among many players who are about to jump ship to LIV Golf.

Sky Sports also reported that Henrik Stenson will be axed as Ryder Cup captain as he too is expected to join the highly controversial breakaway series that is bankrolled by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF).

Smith said he wasn't focusing on those distractions when asked how he would be celebrating his win.

"I'm definitely going to see how many beers fit in this thing," an ecstatic Smith said after reeling in Rory McIlroy, then holding off Young in a rousing finale.

"I'll probably have about 20 Claret Jugs," he said, estimating the spoils would fit "two cans of beer".
