Aussie legend sides with Boris Becker in Nick Kyrgios spat

Aussie tennis legend John Newcombe has weighed into the war-of-words between Nick Kyrgios and Boris Becker after the spat reignited Wednesday.

Kyrgios let rip at Becker on Tuesday, labelling him a ‘doughnut’ after the six-time Grand Slam champ appeared to have had enough of Kyrgios calling out fellow professionals.

"Rats? For holding someone accountable? Strange way to think of it champion, I'm just looking out for people,” he tweeted.

“WHEN my family and families all over the world have respectfully done the right thing. And you have a goose waving his arms around, imma say something.

"Boris Becker is a bigger doughnut than I thought. Can hit a volley, obviously not the sharpest tool in the shed though."

But Kyrgios wasn’t done and slammed the German again after Becker, not for the first time, showed his support for Novak Djokovic overnight after his ill-fated Adria Tour tennis event.

Now, Newcombe has weighed in and praised Kyrgios for having the guts to call out people, inicluding fellow professionals, in the wrong during the coronavirus pandemic.

But, Newcombe did also agree in part with Becker.

He said in his day, grievances were not aired on social media platforms but face-to-face and behind closed doors.

“Nick is Nick. The other guys are obviously stupid,” Newcombe told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“I don’t go out of my way to think about what Nick is thinking. You wouldn’t know what he is going to come up with next but I think it’s good that he’s calling people out. If that’s what he wants to do, that’s good.

“I know when we were playing, if you had a problem you took it to the person. You didn’t make it public. But it’s a different world, I guess.”

Becker was critical of Kyrgios after he called out Alexander Zverev for partying days after he said he would quarantine.

Zverev took part in the Adria Tour tennis event recently but was one of the lucky few not to test positive for coronavirus.

Despite getting the all clear, Zverev assured fans he’d be self-isolating over the next week or two as a precaution.

But videos emerged on Monday of Zverev partying in Monaco just days after being swept up in Djokovic's tour debacle.

“‘Sascha’ Zverev again man, again, again, how selfish can you be?” Kyrgios said in a video uploaded to his Instagram story.

“If you have the f***ing audacity to tweet that you’re going to self-isolate for 14 days...at least have the audacity to stay inside for 14 days.”
