'It's all over': Tennis match ends in confusion after chair umpire gaffe

Many of the world’s top players took part in the the Ultimate Tennis Showdown on the weekend, in a return to the court after the suspension of the ATP Tour, but one match ended in confusion.

While Novak Djokovic held the Adria Tour, the Balkans charity tournament, some players took part in the Ultimate Tennis Showdown.

Feliciano Lopez returned to action against Frenchman Lucas Pouille in the altered tennis format and it appeared everyone was slightly confused with the rules when it came to match point.

Lopez had already caused a distraction during the match when his phone alarm went off as the Frenchman was getting ready to serve.

But this time, it was the Spaniard explaining to the chair umpire he won the match after a point.

The pair went to a sudden-death decider at 11-all, which requires each player serving once each.

The match is decided when a player wins two points in a row.

But after Lopez smashed a one-handed backhand for a winner, clipping the baseline, for his second point in a row he went to celebrate.

However, the chair umpire called out the score as if Lopez was still on match point.

But after Lopez approached the umpire to explain he thought he had won, the chair umpire agreed and the Spaniard was declared the winner.

“Is it good, it is, it’s all over,” the commentator said.

“The players are confused here about the outcome, you win two points in a row and that is it.

“And the match is complete, a little but of confusion amongst the players, but it was clear to Lopez.”

The 38-year-old Spaniard will play Australian Alexei Popyrin in the next fast-paced format match.

Djokovic tournament postponed

Novak Djokovic’s Balkans charity tennis tournament suffered an embarrassing setback on Saturday when the planned Montenegro leg was cancelled over coronavirus protocol rules.

The Adria Tour, which features World No.1 Djokovic, as well as the likes of third-ranked Dominic Thiem, No.7 Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov, the World No.19, got underway in Belgrade on Saturday.

However there was shock and concern over the packed crowd and a lack of social-distancing measures among players and officials.

The Montenegro leg was due to be the third stop on June 27 and 28 after Croatia and before the conclusion in Bosnia.
