Supercars driver David Reynolds is in a race against time to compete at Bathurst 1000 after NSW Health rejected his vaccination exemption because he is not fully immunised.

Over the weekend, Reynolds sparked controversy after his vaccination status came under scrutiny following the round of racing.

Team Kelly Grove were waiting for feedback from NSW Health, but on Thursday it was deemed the driver would be ruled out of the remaining three events at Sydney Motorsport Park this month.

Reynolds will also need to prove he is fully vaccinated before he can compete in the famous race at Mount Panorama on December 5.

Confusion started when Reynolds competed at last week's Sydney SuperNight event, which is when his vaccination status came under scrutiny.

NSW Health officials have subsequently considered, and rejected, an exemption application from the 2017 Bathurst winner this week.

The team admitted Reynolds was not double vaccinated, however his attendance at last weekend's event was in "compliance with temporary protocols and conditions to protect he and other participants" while the matter was resolved.

"David has had his first vaccine shot administered and has scheduled his second vaccine shot," a statement from Kelly Grove Racing read.

"Once fully vaccinated, as scheduled, David could be eligible to drive in the Repco Bathurst 1000."

David Reynolds speaks after vaccination controversy

Following the rejected exemption, Reynolds admitted he was 'shattered' to be missing the next few races.

"I'm shattered to be missing the next three Supercars events," Reynolds said.

"But I understand and respect the health guidelines.

"I can't wait to get back behind the wheel at Bathurst."

Supercars requires a double vaccination to enter large venues such as Sydney Motorsport Park.

Motorsport.com.au reported all Kelly Grove Racing staff received regular Covid-19 tests across the weekend.

Reynolds sits 14th in this season's championship standings after finishing eighth, ninth and 14th in last weekend's three races.
