Will Pucovski betters Don Bradman with 'unreal' slice of history

"Once in a generation" batting sensation Will Pucovski is being heavily backed to make his Test cricket debut for Australia after another astonishing feat in the Sheffield Shield.

The Victoria batsman backed up last week's remarkable 255-not-out against South Australia with another double century against Western Australia on Monday.

Having finished Sunday on 183 not out, Pucovski notched another double ton to become the first Victorian player since the late dean Jones in 1991 to make back-to-back scores of 200 or more.

In doing so, the 22-year-old becomes the first Australian player since Michael Clarke in 2012-13 to accomplish the feat.

Pucovski's extraordinary form has also seen him break the all-time Sheffield Shield record for fewest innings needed to make four scores of 180 of more.

The Victorian phenomenon needed just 27 innings to accomplish the same feat that the legendary Sir Donald Bradman did in 35 innings.

Pucovksi's extraordinary achievement has left cricket fans in awe, with many insisting that his Aussie Test selection is a fait accompli.

Former Australia captain Ian Chappell told ABC Grandstand that the youngster is more than ready to make his Test debut for Australia.

"What's that now? Six or seven first class centuries? That includes a couple of double [centuries]. He's ready," Chappell said.

"I don't know whose idea it was to open for Victoria.... he must have at least agreed to it anyhow.

"His timing is very good. I'd be opening with him."

The Aussie Test legend said Pucovski deserves a crack at opening alongside Warner for Australia, given the scratchy form of incumbent Joe Burns - who has scored a paltry 36 runs in three innings this season.

"Burns has made not many runs at all in this summer and there comes a time where you think to yourself, 'well, where is Burns going?' He's probably not going anywhere, really, and it's time to have a look at Pucovski," Chappell added.

Former Test batsman Brad Hodge was also full of praise for Pucovski, describing him as a special talent that comes along very rarely.

"You know what it’s like when you come across a sportsman that’s just got every tool you need to be a superstar, and Will’s it,” Hodge told SEN Breakfast.

"He's a one in a generation where he can play 100 Test matches and given the circumstances around his health, hopefully that’s fine, now it’s as good a time as ever to get him in the Test side.

"Going back a year and a half ago, he was pretty close to being selected in the Test side but just had to fight through those personal issues.

"The temperament of the young kid is outstanding so physically, mentally and skilfully he’s in a pretty good place.”

Fans hail Pucovski as as Test certainty

Pucovski was finally removed for 202 runs on Monday in what was the first dismissal for the youngster this Sheffield Shield season.

It means the 22-year-old is currently boasting the astonishing average of 457 so far this season.

The batting phenomenon has come close to representing Australia at Test level before, but has opted to drop out of contention due to mental health concerns.

However, Pucovski revealed last month that he's in a "really good place" with his health, declaring himself ready to play in the upcoming Test series against India, if selected.
