Steve Smith was clearly unimpressed after a controversial dismissal in NSW's Sheffield Shield clash with Victoria on Friday.

NSW resumed their second innings at 1-22 on Friday, but an extraordinary collapse saw them bowled out for just 175.

'SAD DAY': Cricket world stunned by Test captain's retirement

Smith was part of a shocking middle-order crumble that saw NSW lose 5-18 and 7-46 to be teetering at 8-91.

The former Test captain was dismissed caught behind off the bowling of Will Sutherland for just 13, however Smith appeared gobsmacked to be given out.

Smith may have believed the ball brushed his thigh pad before going through to wicketkeeper Seb Gotch, rather than the edge of his bat.

"Smith is disconsolate with himself as he trudges off," one commentator said.

"I don't know whether he's disappointed with himself or whether he thinks he didn't edge the ball.

"I don't think I've seen Steve Smith more disappointed in my broadcast career."

Smith appeared to look at the umpire and shake his head as he made his way off the field.

The superstar's dismissal came the morning after his Indian Premier League pay was trimmed by approximately $2 million, having been picked up by Ricky Ponting's Delhi Capitals for $400,000 in the auction.

Smith, having posted an impressive one-day century for NSW on Monday, tallied 20 runs in his red-ball return after Australia's four-Test series against India.

Bowlers salvage something for NSW to defend

NSW's total could have been much worse had it not been for some lower order fireworks from the Blues' bowlers.

Sean Abbott crashed six sixes during a quick-fire 73 from 75 balls, including some 23 runs from one Scott Boland over, to top score in the hosts' second innings.

The visitors have been set a target of 141 to win the star-studded match, which has moved along in frenetic fashion since Peter Handscomb won the toss.

Former Test players Kurtis Patterson and Peter Nevill were both out for ducks during the collapse, while Moises Henriques scored three.

The wicket of nightwatchman Nathan Lyon, who scored 21 after striding out to bat in place of Smith on Thursday, ignited the slump.

Abbott, whose half-century came in just 77 minutes, Mitchell Starc (13) and Trent Copeland (20) dragged their side past 100, which looked highly unlikely earlier in the innings.

Josh Hazlewood faced just five deliveries in an entertaining final-wicket stand of 56 runs, which ended when Abbott went after James Pattinson and the resultant edge flew to Handscomb.

Boland removed Lyon, Copeland, Daniel Hughes and Nick Larkin to finish with 4-57, while Mitchell Perry and Sutherland picked up two wickets each.
