'Grow up': Reporter slams sexist troll after commenting on Nat Fyfe image

Channel 7 AFL reporter Abbey Way has hit back at an online troll after she became the target for posting on a Nate Fyfe image.

Way, a 29-year-old reporter who made a name for herself working on the racing and cricket, was set to work on 7’s coverage of the AFL before the season was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A huge Fremantle fan, Way posted a crown emoji on a photo of Freo captain Fyfe on a Channel 7 AFL post praising the Brownlow Medalist.

But she was immediately met with online abuse.

“Lady wants a Fyfe,” one social media user commented, tagging four friends.

The user continued: “Got a blue tick and she tryna censor me.”

“Welcome to China,” another replied.

After she was called a ‘bitty’, which is a derogatory term, a social media user came to her defence and labelled the comments ‘disrespectful’.

But Way didn’t let the comments go unnoticed and called out the online troll.

“I usually leave this but I don’t want a bar of it today,” she wrote, according to PerthNow.

“‘Lady’ is a sports journo at the network that made this post AND a Freo supporter. Grow up.”

The sexist online abuse towards Way is just the latest incident against women in sport.

Tayla Harris abused online

The most infamous case was a photo of Carlton WAFL star Tayla Harris - now dubbed 'The Kick' - which became a viral sensation.

The photo by Michael Willson received sexist comments on social media - with Channel Seven criticised for deleting their post of the photo.

But a defiant Harris then posted the photo on her own account, receiving support from all walks of life around Australia.
