Fans in disbelief over 'maddest day in Premier League history'

Football fans are in a state of shock after Liverpool and Manchester United conceded seven and six goals respectively in what Piers Morgan described as the “maddest day in Premier League history.”

Defending champions Liverpool were humiliated 7-2 by Aston Villa to end an undefeated start to their title defence on Sunday.

Ollie Watkins scored a hat-trick and Jack Grealish netted twice as Villa made it three wins out of three after only surviving in the league on the last day of last season.

Ross Barkley and John McGinn got the other goals for the hosts while Mohamed Salah scored both of Liverpool’s goals.

The result lifted Villa up to second, level on points with the Reds, who dropped to fifth, three points behind leaders and local rivals Everton who Jurgen Klopp’s men face at Goodison Park in their next match on October 17.

Liverpool became the first reigning Premier League champions to concede seven in a game. The last time it happened in English football’s top division was in 1953.

Meanwhile, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described his side's 6-1 home defeat to Tottenham as his worst day in football.

A 10-man United sunk to their joint-heaviest Premier League defeat as Spurs ran riot at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer, whose position will surely come under threat after this embarrassing loss, saw his side capitulate after going in front inside two minutes through a Bruno Fernandes penalty.

Tanguy Ndombele drew Spurs level two minutes later, before the in-form Son Heung-Min made it 2-1.

After Anthony Martial was sent-off in the 28th-minute for slapping Erik Lamela, United fell apart.

Tottenham scored twice more before halftime through England captain Harry Kane and a second for Son, before Serge Aurier made it 5-1 shortly after the break. Kane completed the scoring with a 79th-minute penalty.

Spurs, who have scored 12 goals in their last three EPL matches, move up to fifth while United drop to 16th.

Fans were left stunned by the carnage, with Liverpool fan Morgan summing up the situation.

“This is the maddest day in Premier League history,” Morgan wrote on Twitter.

“Liverpool appear to have suddenly gone from the best team in the world to the worst team on Merseyside.”

Leicester suffer shock loss as well

Elsewhere, Leicester City’s unbeaten start to the season came to a crashing halt with a 3-0 defeat at home to West Ham.

Michail Antonio became the first Hammer to find the net in five consecutive top-flight away matches since Mike Small in 1991.

Pablo Fornals doubled the lead before halftime and Jarrod Bowen added the third late on.

Arsenal scored two quickfire second-half goals through Bukayo Saka and Nicolas Pepe to seal a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Sheffield United, with David McGoldrick scoring a fine consolation for the visitors.

Southampton overcame a tough first half against West Bromwich Albion as second-half goals from Moussa Djenepo and Oriol Romeu helped the Saints earn a 2-0 home win.

Fulham remain rooted to the foot of the table after a fourth straight defeat, losing 1-0 to Wolves thanks to a goal from Pedro Neto.
