'Guys were using me': Horror fallout from Paige Spiranac's golfing fame

Paige Spiranac has opened up about her many failed attempts to find love, saying men would ‘take advantage’ of her for golf tips.

The 27-year-old golf star is currently engaged, but her happiness was a long time coming.

“I would always open up a conversation with, ‘Hey I play golf’ and anything along those lines and I thought that it would work,” Spiranac said recently on her podcast Playing-A-Round.

“Unfortunately, guys were using me for golf lessons, golf equipment and golf balls.

“(They’d say) ‘So Paige, let’s go out on a golf date. I’ll take you to this driving range and we can just hit golf balls’ and I’d be like, ‘Yeah, that sounds awesome’. It would turn into an hour lesson of me just helping the guy become a better golfer.

“That happened all the time, since I was desperate and I wanted guys to like me.”

Spiranac, who has since stepped away from the pro golf circuit and found fame on social media, gave a prime example.

The American says she thought she was dating a guy only to find out he had a girlfriend and was only using her to improve his golf game.

“There was this other guy who did the same thing but he wanted golf lessons, and he would text me like 24/7, he was really cute and flirty with me,” Spiranac said.

“But the only time we would go on ‘dates’ – and I put that in air quotes – is because they were lessons, and so I would sit there and give him lessons, and he didn’t tell me he had a girlfriend for six months!

“Six months and all of these lessons and nothing happened. He was like, ‘I just want to take it slow, can you help me with my takeaway?’

“It happened all the time and I never learnt my lesson because I thought, ‘This is my way in, guys think I’m cool because I play golf’. Then it just turned into me giving them golf balls and getting them on courses for free.

“They were all in other relationships!”

Spiranac’s podcast becomes major hit

Spiranac guessed she had been burned by guys about 15 times in the same circumstances.

“I think what kept them around was they were actually improving,” Spiranac said. “Originally it started with one golf date and then they dropped a couple of shots and started playing a lot better.

“This guy was shooting in the 90s and by the end of it he was shooting in the mid-70s. It wasn’t me, it was my golf instructions!

“They were like, ‘I’m getting free lessons, I’m getting better, this is great, I get free golf balls, life is perfect and I don’t even have to kiss her’.

“It was so bad and I was so clueless.”

Spiranac’s podcast has become a hit among fans without any golf to watch during the coronavirus crisis.

She previously revealed a horrifying ordeal in which an explicit photo of her was shared online, as well as taking aim at the ‘elitist’ male culture in golf.

The 27-year-old has taken some time away from professional golf to focus on a media career and her anti-bullying charity work.

She is an ambassador for Cybersmile, educating young people about the dangers of cyber-bullying.
