NRLW player's 'hurtful' Instagram post backfires spectacularly

The Brisbane Broncos’ NRLW grand final triumph was ever so slightly sweeter for captain Ali Brigginshaw, who got the last laugh over an unnamed Sydney Roosters rival who called her out on social media earlier in the week.

Three straight NRLW premierships for the Broncos would have been plenty sweet for Brigginshaw, with their 20-10 victory over the Roosters coming a week after she was named Dally M Female Player of the Year.

But in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald after their grand final win, Brigginshaw revealed the Broncos had been given some locker room material thanks to a post from a Roosters player which called into question her Dally M success.

Brigginshaw said the Broncos players were ‘seeing red’ during the captain’s run as a result of the post, which she said had no place in the sport.

“I just think there is no room for it, there’s no need for it and if you’re going to keep doing it there is no room for you in this game,” she said.

“Someone close to her should probably give her the heads up.

“I would go over there and tell you to take it off.

“I know you’re a talented girl and you want to go far but social media is not a way for you to get your name out there and say hurtful things or negative things around other players.”

It was the second time the Roosters have fallen to the Broncos in the NRLW grand final, after going down to Brisbane in the inaugural 2018 decider.

Broncos complete first-ever NRL three-peat

Brisbane's NRLW side created history on Sunday night when they became the only club in Australia with a live premiership three-peat in a major national team sport.

The 20-10 win over the Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium continued a stunning three-season period of dominance in the NRLW competition, in which time the Broncos have lost just one game.

Coach Kelvin Wright said he was in awe of what the Broncos has been able to achieve in a campaign in which most players have been unable to work and are quarantined at home just to play rugby league.

As the only Queensland based team they have also been flying in and out of NSW on game day, including on Sunday.

"They don't get it easy either. I know they sacrifice a lot but that doesn't mean we let up on them," Wright said.

"We demand a lot of our players all during the week in our training sessions.

"The sacrifices that we make have never been used as an excuse, so it's well deserved.

"We've got four players out there that have all three, which is outstanding.

"Hopefully we can come back again next year and do it again, but it's very sweet to do it this year and now that we've done it, it's nice to be able to look back on history now that we have the three-peat."
