Latrell Mitchell shares massive news about family amid dramas at South Sydney

Latrell Mitchell and partner Brielle Mercy have announced the arrival of their first son. The Rabbitohs fullback on Friday shared photos of the couple's newborn with their Instagram followers in what was a shock announcement to many.

Mitchell posted a photo of the boy with the caption: "The Prince of Winmarra has arrived". Winmarra refers to Mitchell's personal clothing line- with the word translating to 'mountain people'.

It is the couple's first son but they already have two daughters together, Inala and Aleena. The boy's first name is yet to be announced.

The social media post announcing their bundle of joy was flooded with congratulatory messages from teammates and rivals. Cody Walker was among those to send a message to the pair writing, "Congrats fam, can’t wait to meet him", while Cameron Murray chipped in saying, “Congrats guys”.

NRL stars Andrew Fifita, Brian To’o and Josh Mansour also wished the couple the best. The South Sydney Rabbitohs official Instagram account took to social media to share the news with the wider NRL community. “Congrats to Latrell and Brielle on the birth of their son! Welcome to the (world) young fella,” the Rabbitohs wrote.

Alex McKinnon calls for Latrell Mitchell to be moved into the halves

Alex McKinnon has called for South Sydney to move Mitchell into the halves if they want to avoid a repeat of their embarrassing flop in 2023. The Rabbitohs became the first team in the NRL era to miss out on the finals after leading the competition as late as round 11, with a loss to the Roosters in the final round sealing their fate.

Mitchell missed that game due to suspension, which added to the dramas surrounding the superstar fullback. The 26-year-old struggled for form after returning from a long layoff due to a calf injury and copped an array of criticism for the Rabbitohs dismal fade-out.

Some pundits have called for Mitchell to be deployed in the centres to better allow him to utilise his running game. He won two premierships with the Roosters while playing centre, and has had success out wide at State of Origin and Test level.

But the former Knights and Dragons player wants to see Mitchell become Cody Walker's halves partner. "Mitchell has long been compared to NRL legend Greg Inglis, who played most of his career at fullback but also won a Clive Churchill Medal at five-eighth," McKinnon told Fox Sports earlier this month.

"Mitchell could play the same role in attack as well as he does at fullback, provide a real physical presence in the defence line and be more efficient with his efforts. I genuinely believe Walker is one of the most natural rugby league players of the 2000s and needs to be handed the reins at halfback while he’s still at the peak of his powers so he can truly own the result each week."

McKinnon also said off-season recruit Jack Wighton should be used at fullback, rather than at centre or back-row where he is expected to line up for the Rabbitohs. "Jack Wighton at fullback will start their sets off right and I believe this will have a huge effect on their consistency and ability to win in October," he added.
