Nick Kyrgios caps off giant-killing week with Mexican Open title
Nick Kyrgios has taken down world No.3 Alexander Zverev to win a stirring Mexican Open title in Acapulco.
His first trophy since January 2018, the Australian blitzed Zverev for a 6-3 6-4 victory in just one hour and 30 minutes.
Kyrgios, who entered the week as the world No.72, is expected to rise to 31st after a week in which he defeated No.2 Rafael Nadal, three-time major winner Stan Wawrinka and world No.9 John Isner on his way to the final.
Drama-filled matches against Nadal and Wawrinka were not repeated against Isner and Zverev as the Aussie stayed calm and put on a show with his racquet.
“This is an amazing tournament. I loved it two years go, I had some crazy memories here,” he said after the win.
“The crowd’s amazing. An amazing event. I appreciate the support. Everyone involved. I’m definitely going to come here next year and every year I play this sport. I’ll be back.”
Kyrgios took a 4-1 lead in the opening set after just 19 minutes, with his German opponent unable to get a handle on him.
His serve faltered at times – he landed just 50 per cent of first serves in the opening frame and served five double faults in the match to only 13 aces.
But behind numerous drop shots that continuously baffled Zverev and big winners down the lines, Kyrgios won the title.
“I know you guys had a little bit of a fight with the crowd but really he is the one who deserves to win the tournament this week,” the German said in a classy runners-up speech.
“He is the real champion of the week. I think everybody needs to give credit to the people who deserve credit and I think definitely Nick you showed you were the best player, so well done to you.”
