The moment Kyrgios won over crowd with Mexican wave

Was this the moment Nick Kyrgios finally won over a hostile Acapulco crowd?

Midway through the second set of his epic semi-final victory over John Isner, the fans brought a sudden halt to proceedings.

Those in attendance simply couldn’t resist breaking out the Mexican wave:

After a week-long battle with the fans the crowd’s forced delay might have set Kyrgios off.

Far more mellow than in his wins over Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka, the Aussie had a laugh and actually joined in.

Kyrgios raised his racquet to direct the crowd to reverse their effort.

Unfortunately for the world No.72 the wave came to its natural end, but his involvement seemed to pay off.

Later in the set, when Kyrgios was on the verge of winning the match, the crowd began a loud chant for the former Wimbledon quarter-finalist:

Kyrgios exchanged jokes with the crowd throughout the match in scenes far from his outbursts earlier in the week.

In the first set the Aussie called out for Nadal fans to make more noise, then gestured for the crowd to get loud after taking a crucial lead.

He was even quick to remind one screaming Nadal fan that the Spaniard had “gone home” – courtesy of his victory, of course.

Will Kyrgios have the fans’ favour in tomorrow’s final against Alexander Zverev?

According to him, perhaps not.

“I don’t think I’m winning the fans, to be honest,” he said after the match.

Whether he believes that is unclear, having lauded the Acapulco crowd this week despite their constant jeering.

Kyrgios said his win over Nadal had “one of the best atmospheres I’ve ever played in”.
