Jamie Carragher believes the target of scoring more Premier League goals than Thierry Henry will be one of the main reasons why Mohamed Salah signs a new contract at Liverpool.

Salah’s penalty in the 2-1 win over Chelsea at Anfield moves him up to joint-ninth in the Premier League’s all-time goalscoring list.

Salah now has 162 Premier League goals, with Robbie Fowler just one ahead on 163 with Thierry Henry on 175 goals and Frank Lampard on 177 goals.

And former Liverpool defender Carragher said on Sky Sports: “He will have an eye on Thierry Henry and Frank Lampard by the end of this season.

“I think stats like this are one of the biggest reasons why Mo Salah will sign a new contract at Liverpool.

“Of course they will be talking about money and length of contract but I think these are the things that really get the juices flowing for Salah.

“He breaks all the records at Liverpool but getting as far as he can up those lists are a big part of his focus as a player.

“I’m not saying he’s selfish, he’s obviously a great team player.”

Former Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge added: “I think anyone who’s an attacker who wants to be known as one of the best or the best, you have to be obsessed with things like that because your job is to score and help the team win.

“For him it’s now to the point of legacy and ‘how can I add to my legacy?’

“He’s going to go down as arguably the best, top three for sure in terms of Liverpool’s history.

“For me looking at Thierry and those types of guys I do believe he has an eye on that.”
