'Get to know me': Michael Clarke's big announcement after marriage split
It was a busy day for Michael Clarke on Thursday.
Just hours after confirming the sad news that he was splitting with wife Kyly after seven years of marriage, the former Australian cricket captain announced a big career move.
‘WHAT HOPE HAVE I GOT’: Michael Clarke's devastating divorce 'fear'
On Thursday afternoon Clarke announced that he’d be joining rugby league legend Laurie Daley as co-host of Sky Sports Radio’s Big Sports Breakfast.
Clarke will be taking over from veteran broadcaster Terry Kennedy.
“Getting some tips from the great man @laurie_daley6 about how to wake up at 4am,” Clarke wrote on Instagram while announcing the new gig.
“Looking forward to joining @bigsportsbrekky @skyracingau very soon.”
An official press release later confirmed the news.
“It’s a show that I have always listened to growing up. My father listens every morning,” Clarke said.
“I always stayed across it during my playing days, and I love the fact I have the opportunity to talk about all racing and sports, not just cricket.
“I think the consistency of being on radio Monday to Friday allows the Australian public to get to know me better and the chance to work beside a childhood hero like Laurie Daley, how can you not look forward to that.”
Clarke’s marriage ends in divorce
Clarke and wife Kyly have agreed on a financial settlement and on arrangements to co-parent their four-year-old daughter Kelsey Lee, The Australian reports.
“After living apart for some time, we have made the difficult decision to separate as a couple, amicably,” they told the newspaper in a joint statement.
“With the greatest of respect for each other, we've come to the mutual conclusion that this is the best course for us to take while committed to the co-parenting of our daughter.”
Clarke hinted that he’d moved out of their family home in Vaucluse when he posted a photo on Instagram last week showing him at the Bondi apartment he also owns with Kyly.
The $7 million pad is reportedly part of a $40 million divorce that also includes the $12 million, five bedroom house in Vaucluse, another Bondi apartment Clarke owns with sister Leanne, as well as $18 million in savings and investments.
Clarke also hinted that the split was on the cards with an emotional Instagram post earlier this week in which he appeared to tell daughter Kelsey he was “right beside you.”
Clarke played 115 Tests and 245 one-day internationals for Australia, scoring over 17,000 runs at international level.
He has since forged a successful career in the media, while Kyly was recently announced as one of the new judges on Channel 7 renovation show House Rules.
She also runs her own company ‘Lyfestyled by Kyly Clarke’.
“We’d like to acknowledge the wonderful support we’ve had from family and friends, and at this time request privacy so that we can manage this next stage of our lives,” the statement read.
