AFL great opens up on new romance with Melbourne Cup host

AFL great Brad Green has opened up about his new relationship with horse racing reporter Caty Price, following the tragic death of his wife last year.

The AFL community was left shocked in May 2019 when Green’s wife Anna died at the age of 40 after suffering a cardiac arrest.

The former Melbourne Demons player has since found love again with Price, who is part of Channel 10’s coverage of the Melbourne Cup.

Green told the Herald Sun he was at a Demons game last September when he met Price through a friend.

“I had never met Caty,’’ he said. “She was with a friend who came up to pass on her condolences.

“We chatted for a bit and I later saw a post on Instagram about the Demons winning and I commented saying ‘it was lovely to meet you yesterday’.

“That’s all it was until we saw each other again at the races. We then started chatting and connecting and it went from there really.”

Brad and Anna had been married since 2013, sharing sons Oliver, 10, and Wilba, 8, together.

Price and Green admitted to being nervous about starting a new relationship considering the recent loss.

“I think knowing the circumstances I went through, we were both nervous,’’ Green said.

“Is it the right thing, are we hurting people? There’s feelings on both sides. You have feelings for Anna’s friends and family and making sure everyone else is all right, but us, too.

“We did keep it quiet, it started slow anyway. This wasn’t a race into dating. It started as going out for dinner, catching up for a drink. Just taking our time. We didn’t need to start anything too quick because we both were sensitive to the situation that I was in.”

Green and Price went public with their relationship in February, with Price moving in with her new man and his sons in May.

Brad Green devastated by wife’s death

Green shared the heartbreaking news of his wife’s death last May.

“Goodbyes are not forever, are not the end,” he wrote at the time.

“It simply means, I’ll miss you until we meet again. Rest easy, my darling #xxx3boys.”

Anna’s family confirmed the tragic circumstances around her death in a statement.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we confirm the passing of beloved mother, wife, daughter, sister and friend Anna Green,” the family wrote.

“Anna suffered a cardiac arrest last week and passed away peacefully at lunch time yesterday surrounded by her immediate family.

“The family would like to thank the committed medical team at the intensive care unit at Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital and would now ask for privacy as they come to terms with their loss.”

Anna worked in the fashion retail industry before launching her own brand and turning to lifestyle writing.

In the wake of Anna’s death the AFL community rallied around Brad and his young sons.

The boys were invited to join the Melbourne Demons as they ran through the banner prior to their Queen’s Birthday clash with Collingwood last year.

Demons captain Nathan Jones and rising star Christian Petracca accompanied the children through the banner, while Green looked on proudly from the boundary line.

The gesture won universal praise among the AFL community, led by Richmond Tigers star Jack Riewoldt, who was on commentary duties for Fox Footy.

“Today is a great example of what football clubs are about,” he said during the broadcast.

“It just shows that footy is such a great vehicle for families to go through hardship and be supported by teammates, supporters and society as a whole.”
