Kaylee McKeown's family go off the rails in all-time interview after triumph at Olympics

The Aussie swimmer's mum and siblings were beside themselves after she won gold.

Kaylee McKeown's mum and siblings have produced one of the all-time great interviews after she won gold in the 100m backstroke at the Olympics on Tuesday night. The Aussie superstar defended her title from the Tokyo Games three years ago, beating American rival Regan Smith with a new Olympic record.

Speaking to Channel 9 after the race, McKeown's mother, sister and two brothers were over the moon. Mum Sharon was clearly a bundle of nerves, and her daughter's late surge to victory had her on the edge of her seat.

"She turned fourth, but she's always got a good back end," she said. "We're glad that she pulled it off." Sharon said late husband Sholto would have had some choice words if he could have seen Kaylee's triumph. "He would have been saying F-yeah!" she said.

Kaylee's sister Taylor, who also represented Australia at the Olympics, said: "I was so nervous, so excited. And we saw in the last 10 metres she just started to pull ahead and we were like 'she's done it'. Over the moon."

But it was McKeown's brothers who really stole the show. Decked out in lime green wigs and gold sparkly dresses, the brothers nearly went off the rails in a hilarious interview. One of them exclaimed that his mum nearly had to leave the arena to 'poo' because she was so nervous before the race, while the other sent a message to Karl Stefanovic for some 'kick-ons' later tonight.

"That was unreal. We were going nuts up there. It was - yeah, speechless," one of the brothers said. The other added: "It was unreal, man. She was always going to do it. We backed her all the way. She is the legend. She is the GOAT."

Speaking about mother Sharon he added: "She was going to poo herself before. She was that nervous, she couldn't contain it. Sorry, Shaz-dog, I have to tell the truth."

Interviewer Roz Kelly said: "Trust the sons to always embarrass their mothers. Oh my goodness. You were that nervous." Sharon responded: "I was nervous, yes, I think so. But at the end of the day, regardless of the outcome, you are still proud of your kids, whether they win, lose - they're here. That's all you can go by."

When asked how they would celebrate, the brother said: "Kick-ons with Karl, surely. See you later, brother. Have the beers poured."

As for Kaylee, she paid a special tribute to late dad Sholto after the victory. Her father died in 2020 after a battle with cancer, and he's always in her thoughts when she races.

"Expectation is a privilege and if you get the privilege, it is special," she said. "I like to think I have a super power and that's my dad. I believe he was with me tonight. He would be extremely proud. I'm grateful to have my family here because he would be here in spirit."
