Jonathan Brown fights back tears in emotional tribute to Danny Frawley

Three time premiership winner and Fox Footy commentator Jonathan Brown has held back tears as he shared a story about Danny Frawley after the St Kilda legend died on Monday.

Speaking on the Fox Footy show On The Couch, Brown and Sydney premiership coach Paul Roos shared emotional stories of Frawley after his tragic death.

Brown recounted the story of watching Frawley on tours of country Victoria when he was younger and how it inspired a younger generation.

“My first memory of Spud was with Roosy when they used to go around Victoria and do the Victorian super clinics,” Brown said.

“Coming to the ground and seeing Spud, and then 20 years later I was doing the same thing with him, when we were going around country Victoria on the Toyota regional bus tours.

“I looked at those kids and I thought, I saw myself in those kids. I thought, 20 years ago I was doing that.”

Roos echoed the sentiment of Frawley’s influence on the game, recounting his stories travelling with Spud throughout the tours of country Victoria.

St Kilda release statement

St Kilda released a statement following the news of Frawley’s death.

“We are incredibly saddened by Danny’s death,” President Andrew Bassat said.

“Our thoughts are with Anita, and daughters Chelsea, Keeley and Danielle, and we will do whatever we can to support them in the days, weeks and months ahead.

“Danny will be remembered as one of St Kilda’s greatest ever players and a dear friend to so many at the football club.

“We share our grief with them and we will endeavour to provide an opportunity for them to share their own personal tributes in the coming days,” he added.

A statement from Crocmedia, with which Frawley was associated for many years, paid tribute to their "great friend".

"Danny was simply loved. A true Australian character, a brilliant entertainer, a selfless father, husband and friend," spokesman Craig Hutchison said.

The crash is the second death on Victorian roads in 24 hours, after a 19-year-old man died and two other men were seriously injured when their car crashed into a tree about midnight on Sunday at Gisborne.
