'Devastated': Aussie netball rocked by tragic death of 19-year-old star

The Australian netball community is mourning the tragic death of 19-year-old rising star Ivy-Rose Hughes.

Hughes died in a fatal car crash on Wednesday night in McLaren Vale in South Australia.

The 19-year-old was the passenger in a car that collided with another vehicle at an intersection just after 10pm.

Both cars then went down an embankment, with the vehicle carrying Hughes flipping on its side.

“Police and emergency services were called to the intersection of Main Road and Malpas Road, after reports of a collision involving a Mazda SUV and a Mitsubishi utility,” said South Australian police.

“A passenger in the Mazda, a 19-year-old Banksia Park woman died at the scene.

“The driver of the Mazda and three other passengers were taken to hospital for treatment. Their injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

“The three occupants of the Mitsubishi were also taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

“Major Crash officers attended the scene to investigate the collision. Roads were closed in the area for most of the night but have since reopened.”

Locals told Nine News the intersection is a notorious black spot and signage is poor in the area.

Netball world in shock over young star's death

Hughes was a rising star in South Australian netball, having represented the Matrics Netball Club and South Australian Sports Institute (SASI).

She competed for her state at the Under 17 National Championships in 2019 to 2020.

Her death has left the netball community in disbelief.

“An incredible netballer and even more incredible young woman, the entire netball community has been saddened by this news,” the Matrics Netball Club wrote on Facebook.

“Our thoughts are with Ivy’s family and loved ones at this time, along with the entire netball family who are feeling the impact of this great loss.”

Netball South Australia said: "The entire netball community is devastated to lose such an amazing young woman.

"Forever a star. Forever a Red. Forever in our hearts."

The South Australian Sports Institute added: "The SASI family is devastated by the loss of Ivy-Rose Hughes who tragically passed in a motor vehicle accident last night.

"Ivy was part of the SASI netball program from 2018 - 2020. Our thoughts are with Ivy’s family, friends & the entire netball community."
