Irony behind announcer's embarrassing Tim Tszyu gaffe

Tim Tszyu had a night to remember on Wednesday after his victory over Jeff Horn, but ring announcer James O’Shea had one to forget, after a clumsy mistake introducing the main event.

Fortunately for the hype man his gaffe was outshone by Tszyu’s impressive victory over the former champion Horn, but fans were quick to give it to him at the time.

O’Shea tripped over his words as he revved up the crowd right before the first round.

“Australia, we have waited a long time for this,” O’Shea called.

“It’s Tim Horn up against Jeff Horn. Who will be crowned the king of Australian boxing?”

His slip of the tongue was soon forgotten though, as Tszyu’s classy display against Horn gave the youngster the confidence he's now ready to emulate his boxing legend father Kostya and fight for a world title.

The 25-year-old was emphatic in stopping former world champion Jeff Horn after eight rounds at Townsville's Queensland Country Bank Stadium on Wednesday night.

He soaked up the arena's atmosphere, matched Horn's power and countering it with superior fitness, speed and precision in a classy, comprehensive victory that answered all the pre-fight queries about his readiness to step up.

Horn entered with confidence but was clumsy early, Tszyu holding is own in the first two rounds before stamping his mark in the dominant third.

He landed two clean blows, the former world champion stunned after slipping twice and being knocked down again late in the round.

Horn rallied with crowd support through the later rounds but was unable to land enough significant blows.

Tszyu coming again late in the eighth round with a series of body blows and referee Phil Austin calling it while Horn's corner contemplated giving their man one more minute to land the miracle blow.

"I just want to let everyone know my name's Tim, not the son (of Kostya)," he said in the ring after his huge win.

"But all respect to Jeff ... it's an honour to sell out a stadium like this with another Australian, but this is a young man's sport and I was better."

Tszyu's WBO Global and Australian IBF super welterweight title retention sets him on track for a potential world title fight, while a series of bouts in Russia are also on the cards.

Horn, 32, and with three losses from his last five fights, faces a tough decision about whether or not to box on.
