Indian cricket fans have let rip at the airport scenes involving Pat Cummins after the Aussie captain was welcomed home in Sydney in a rather low key manner. Cummins and members of the winning Australian cricket team arrived home on Wednesday after a stunning World Cup triumph against India in the final.

India were undefeated heading into the showpiece event and were heavy favourites to lift the trophy on home soil. However, Cummins and his men put on a masterclass having won the toss to silence the 90,000-strong stadium.

Captain Cummins arrived back on Wednesday after months overseas for the World Cup campaign to answer a few questions from the media. The Aussie captain was thrilled with how the World Cup unfolded and said he was still coming to terms with winning the tournament. He answered a few questions and exited, keen for a break before the Australian summer of cricket.

And images of the World Cup winning captain arriving home reached India with frustrated fans taking aim at the scenes. Many Indian fans can't believe there wasn't a crowd of supporters waiting for the triumphant Aussies returning home early on a Wednesday morning.

Indian cricket players are often greeted with a huge number of supporters at airports back at home. Even David Warner needed a police escort during the test series played earlier this year. And fans have rounded on Australian supporters for the lack of fanfare.

T20 series between Australian and India panned after World Cup

A number of Aussie have remained behind in India to play in the T20 series, which has drawn criticism. Bizarrely, despite months overseas in 2023 for the Ashes and two campaigns in India, Australia are set to play the host nation in a T20 series starting this week.

Fans have slammed the series for going ahead after a gruelling tournament for both teams as David Warner became the latest player to withdraw from the squad. The series kicks off on Friday (just five days after the World Cup final), and has been widely panned as meaningless. Warner, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Mitch Marsh have all arrived home on Wednesday rather than playing in the series, and coach Andrew McDonald is also departing India for a break.

Adam Zampa and Travis Head have both stayed in India to take part. However, upon Marsh's arrival back in Australia, he joked it would be unlikely Head lined-up for the Friday game.

“(Travis Head) is definitely in the votes … I’m not sure he’ll be playing that game (on Thursday). I’m no selector or coach, but if he plays that game it will be a miracle.” Cameron Green is also set to miss out on the series having been with the squad for a majority of 2023.
