Sam Kerr and her fiancee Kristie Mewis look set to be reunited in London, with reports the latter is set for a career switch to English side West Ham, in the Women's Super League (WSL). Mewis currently plays for Gotham FC in the United States but The Athletic reports the USA international is expected to become the east London club's first signing of the January transfer window.

Mewis was a member of the United States Women's National Team (USWNT) team that crashed out of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in the round of 16 after suffering a shock defeat to Sweden on penalties. The 32-year-old was also a rival for Kerr and the Matildas, who went on an incredible run all the way to the World Cup semi-finals, before losing to runner-up England and then Sweden in the third-place play-off.

If Mewis' move to West Ham is completed as expected, it will see her join Kerr in London, where the Matildas striker stars for WSL champions Chelsea. Mewis' game time for Gotham FC has been limited in 2023 due to her participation in the World Cup and a lower leg injury.

However, the 32-year-old did return to help Gotham win the 2023 NWSL Championships. Mewis provided the assist for Katie Stengel's goal that sent Gotham to the final and will leave for England as a domestic champion in her homeland.

It will also see the pair resume their rivalry in the WSL, where West Ham currently sitting second-bottom of the league, ahead of only Bristol City on goal difference. Mewis could potentially make her debut for the Hammers against Tottenham on January 21, in what will be the club's first match of 2024 following the festive break.

Mewis has been capped 53 times by her country and was one of 14 USWNT players called up to their first World Cup during the showpiece tournament in Australia and New Zealand. The midfielder made one substitute appearance in the knockout stage defeat to Sweden, and converted a penalty in the shootout before the USWNT's eventual exit.

The move to West Ham will be music to the ears of Mewis and Kerr, who confirmed rumours of their engagement earlier this year. The USWNT star and Matildas captain have been in a relationship since early 2021 and decided to take their relationship to the next level in September.

Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis happily engaged

Mewis only confirmed rumours that the pair were engaged in November, despite several major clues emerging on social media before that. In a photo of Kerr and Mewis relaxing on a boat after the Women's World Cup, the American player can be seen with a gigantic rock on her ring finger, with the post dated September 1.

It wasn't until November that the American star officially addressed the speculation, however, during an interview with People. Mewis told the publication that Kerr has "just been everything" to her. "My biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain all, all of my crazy antics," the American said.

Mewis revealed earlier this year that she's "proud" to be able display her relationship with Kerr on a global stage like the World Cup. “I think just being out and being two girls in love, I think if we can change one or two people’s lives and the way that they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel, then that means a lot to me,” she said. Kerr added: “We’re not private people. I like sharing my story. I like sharing who I am outside of football.”
