Aussie young gun Alou Kuol has sent the football world into meltdown with an extraordinary goal against Iraq at the Under-23 Asian Cup.

The German-based 20-year-old scored with an outrageous scorpion kick in first-half stoppage time in Uzbekistan on Saturday as the Olyroos claimed a point despite playing most of the game with 10 men.

After a cross into the box from Josh Rawlins went behind Kuol, it looked like he had no chance to connect with it.

But the whizz-kid simply dived forward and threw up his right leg behind him, connecting with the ball and sending it past the hapless goalkeeper.

Kuol was mobbed by his teammates after the insane goal, which has gone viral around the world.

"Happy to get the goal," Kuol said in a post by Football Australia on Twitter.

"Don't ask me how I done it. I was running forward and saw the ball go behind me, and I just thought ‘yeah, let’s do it’.

“I couldn’t do anything else so I just hit it and it came off.”

He then joked: “Out of 10? I’d give it a five. That’s normal. Just give me the same ball and I’ll do it again!

“I’m lying, that was nice.”

Aussie football commentator Brenton Speed tweeted: "Alou Kuol just won the Puskas! Come on Aussies!"

Robbie Cornthwaite described it as "one of the all time strikes in an Australian national team jersey", while Adam Peacock wrote: "We just saw the greatest goal in the history of football."

The Puska award is given to the player who scores the best goal of the year, male or female.

Kuol will certainly be in the running after his staggering strike.

Unfortunately for the Aussies they couldn't hang onto the lead as Iraq struck back to level the scores in the 56th minute when Hasan Abdulkareem equalised.

Australia thought they had stolen the points when awarded a late penalty, only for the decision to be overturned by VAR.

However the draw was a remarkable effort considering Kusini Yengi's early red card left them a man down for the majority of the game.

After beating Kuwait 2-0 in their opening fixture, Australia are sitting on four points after two games and need just a point from their final group stage match against Jordan to advance to the quarter-finals.
