Indian superstar Virat Kohli has once again struggled to live up to his lofty standards after being dismissed for 17 against England and sinking to an unwanted career first.

Rishabh Pant's unbeaten 125 and Hardik Pandya's superb all-round display helped India seal a five-wicket victory and a 2-1 series win over England in the third and final one-day international at Old Trafford.

'THIS IS AWFUL': England sink to 'embarrassing' low in ODI

India enjoyed a brilliant tour of England, having won the T20 series, drawn the Test series and won the ODIs.

However Kohli was one player that has continued to struggle for form.

Having dropped out of the Top 10 batters on the ICC Test cricket rankings, Kohli failed to make more than 20 runs in any one of the ODI matches.

Kohli took 20 balls to reach 17 runs, before he was caught behind from a Reece Topley delivery.

The Indian star's last five scores in one-day internationals are 8, 18, 0, 16 and 17.

This marks the first time in Kohli's illustrious career that has recorded five successive scores below 20 in international cricket.

Kohli's 33 runs across the three ODIs against England also marked the fourth-lowest accumulated score for the batter in a series.

Since 2020, Kohli is averaging just 36.75 in 20 innings in ODIs.

While far from horrible, from 2017-2019 the star batter was averaging 79.19.

However, Kohli has still scored the most ODI 50s (nine 50+ scores) of any Indian player since 2020.

Kohli's recent performance has once again raised questions over his form.

India record series win against England

While Kohli couldn't be the star, Pant produced his first ODI century to steer India to victory .

India's explosive wicketkeeper batsman Pant took them home with 47 balls to spare by reverse-sweeping Joe Root for four, after he smashed David Willey for five boundaries in the previous over.

"Hopefully, I'll remember my first ODI century for the rest of my life," Pant said.

"But when I was in there, I was just focusing on one ball at a time. When a team is under pressure and you bat like that, that's what you aspire to do."

Earlier, England were dismissed for 259 in 45.5 overs after Pandya picked up four wickets.

India won the toss and chose to bowl first and fast bowler Mohammed Siraj gave the tourists the perfect start, dismissing Jonny Bairstow and Root for ducks in the second over to leave England at 2-12.

Jason Roy (41) and Stokes (27) steadied the ship but Pandya (4-24) struck in his first over to remove Roy and later dismissed Stokes to put the brakes on.

Moeen Ali then combined with Jos Buttler for a 75-run fifth-wicket stand before he was caught behind off Ravindra Jadeja.

"We were short on runs," said Buttler.

"We needed a good start with the ball so that was fantastic. We created chances, but two guys took the game away from us, that's where we lost the game."
