'Secretly a Jedi': Steve Smith avoids bizarre dismissal after bails dislodge

The Stars thought they had the world’s premier batsman Steve Smith out for just two runs in the BBL when the bails dislodged, until the third umpire got involved.

Smith ducked under a Haris Rauf bouncer and appeared to knock off his bails as he fell backwards towards the stumps.

The zing bails lit up and the Stars celebrated after captain Glenn Maxwell thought he had the Sixers’ star player.

But Smith remained resolute as the decision was sent upstairs and quickly overturned as the was clear the wind had knocked bails off the stumps.

Fans had fun at Smith’s influence over the game.

Spin king and now commentator Shane Warne couldn’t believe the wind had knocked the bails off, despite a summer of the ball hitting the stumps without them budging.

“We’ve seen over the summer the ball hit the stumps and the bails don’t come off,” Warne said.

“This time there is a gust of wind and the bails come off.”

Stars batsman Peter Handscomb had a laugh at the situation.

“That is probably not a bad way to try get Smudger (Smith) out”, Handscomb said.

“Everyone in the world has tried everything else, let’s try a bit of hit wicket.”
