'The new Serena': Osaka wins Australian Open title in 'total domination'

Naomi Osaka has extended her perfect record in grand slam singles finals with a dominant straight sets win against Jennifer Brady in the Australian Open women's final on Saturday night.

The 6-4 6-3 victory clinched the Japanese superstar's fourth grand slam singles title, in her fourth major final.

Osaka - the 2019 Australian Open champion - continued her love affair with Melbourne Park in a scintillating performance that simply blew Brady off the court.

The Japanese superstar needed only 77 minutes to see off Brady, becoming the first woman since Monica Seles 30 years ago to win her first four grand slam finals.

But, ominously for Osaka's rivals, not even legends Serena and Venus Williams, Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert or Billie-Jean King managed to win their first major finals.

Still only 23, Osaka now holds two of the sport's four biggest trophies and could conceivably secure a non-calendar-year grand slam if she also wins the French Open in June and Wimbledon in July.

Osaka's latest triumph follows her 2019 Australian Open win and 2018 and 2020 US Open victories.

An ominous match-up for Brady began in shaky circumstances during the third game when two double faults handed Osaka the first break of the match.

However, Osaka was unable to take advantage as the World No.3 experienced her own struggles on serve.

Brady brushed off her woes from the previous game to grab an immediate break back, before finding her serving rhythm in a commanding sixth game.

The American began to unleash some of her trademark groundstrokes to try and force the issue with the three-time major champion.

With the first set back on serves, Brady berated herself in the eight game as her first serve continued to fail her.

Normally one of the 22nd seed's biggest weapons, Brady's first serve percentage was hovering below 35 percent for the opening set.

The American managed to hold, before setting up a big break point opportunity in the ninth game that saw her let out a loud roar.

Osaka held her nerve to keep Brady at bay, before edging closer to taking the opening set.

With Brady serving to stay in the opening stanza, the American again double faulted to open the door for Osaka.

The American then handed the third seed the opening set after hitting an unforced error into the net, with the court at her mercy.

Osaka has won 44 grand slam matches and only lost once when she's won the first set of a grand slam.

In the blink of an eye the Japanese star had raced out to a 4-0 lead in the second after winning six consecutive games.

Brady wasn't about to go down without a fight though and after breaking her 23-year-old opponent, the American consolidated her own serve to threaten a comeback.

Osaka finishes with a flourish

As she's shown so many times in the past though, Osaka brushed off the minor blip to re-establish her dominance by forcing Brady to try and serve to stay in the match.

The American did manage to hold although it merely delayed the inevitable as a flawless next service game for Osaka clinched the straight sets win.

Fans were left scrambling for superlatives for the Japanese superstar after the match, with many viewers heralding her as the "New Serena Williams.
