'Bit harsh': Mitchell Starc's brutal sledge as Aussies humiliate New Zealand

Mitchell Starc has delivered a brutal send-off for Jeet Raval as Australia thumped New Zealand in the first Test in Perth.

Australia landed an emphatic blow on New Zealand and took a 1-0 lead in the Trans-Tasman Trophy with a 296-run flogging of the tourists.

Reduced to just three front-line bowlers through injury to Josh Hazlewood, Australia rolled New Zealand for just 171 on Sunday chasing 468 for victory.

It helped complete a win inside four days against the world's No.2 team, as their record in Australia slumped to just one win in their last 23 Tests.

After Marnus Labuschagne helped set up Australia's advantage with 144 in their first-innings 416, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon did the job with the ball.

Starc claimed 4-45 to go with his first-innings 5-52, taking his record with the pink ball to 42 scalps in just seven day-night Tests.

Moments before dismissing Raval for his first wicket of the second innings, Starc got inside the Kiwi’s head with a brutal sledge.

“You wouldn’t want to ruin it, the last chance of your career,” Starc could be heard saying.

“Christmas is pretty good when you have it off though, They do good lunches for Christmas in Melbourne.”

Commentator Brendan Julian described Starc’s sledge as a “bit harsh” before the left-armer sent Raval back to the pavilion.

Starc also got the key wicket of Ross Taylor on Sunday, removing the star batsman when he under-edged on through to Tim Paine behind the stumps.

Lyon, meanwhile, finished with 4-63, getting plenty of turn out of a wicket with cracks offering plenty of movement for both the quicks and spinners.

In a poor Sunday for the Black Caps, only BJ Watling reached 40 as one of the world's best batting line-ups succumbed for just 337 runs across their two innings.

Raval facing the axe for Boxing Day

Raval is mired in the worst form slump of his 23-Test career, and his double failure in Perth could prove to be the final straw ahead of the Boxing Day Test against Australia.

The 31-year-old has scored just 66 runs at an average of 7.3 from his last nine Test innings.

His last Test knock of substance was his 132 on home soil against Bangladesh in February.

In the day-night Test against Australia at Optus Stadium, Raval was dismissed for one in each innings.

But he might be given one more chance given NZ's lack of batting depth in their wider squad.

Back-up keeper Tom Blundell is the only real option to enter the XI as a specialist batsman, which would force either Henry Nicholls or BJ Watling to open in place of Raval.

NZ captain Kane Williamson was measured when asked about Raval's poor form.

"I suppose Jeet is like every other batsman in the world and that's that they want more and more runs, and you always have good days and bad days," Williamson said.

"These are some hard lessons for him and great experiences as well.

"In terms of looking forward, just having finished this game it's important we reflect on it and any selections will be based upon the surfaces and the squad that we have at the time.”
