'Mind blown': Tennis world erupts over star's bizarre mid-match tweet

Stefanos Tsitsipas was in action during the Monday night session at the Australian Open and fans couldn't have been more perplexed when a tweet was sent from his social media account.

Tsitsipas had failed to make the quarter-final of a grand slam since his devastating loss to Novak Djokovic at the French Open last year.

The World No.4 was looking for a quick start against American star Taylor Fritz, but was stunned as he dropped the first set of his round of 16 clash.

Tsitsipas was cautioned early for a time violation on serve during the match and was subsequently docked a first serve when he repeated the offence.

However, he then held his service game and appeared to mock the chair umpire when he rushed to the service line and waited for the time to tick down before serving.

“He is looking at the clock now,” Commentator Todd Woodbridge said on Channel Nine.

“He is toying with the chair umpire.”

However, he then took an age to serve when the score was locked at 3-3, which prompted the crowd to alert him to the shot clock.

Tsitsipas was broken and subsequently lost the set.

In even more bizarre circumstances, during the first set, a tweet from Tsitsipas' account was sent out.

The most likely reasoning was Tsitsipas scheduled the tweet, or a member of his team sent it.

However, it didn't stop the tweet going bonkers on social media.

Many fans couldn't help but joke about the bizarre timing as he was about to lost the first set.

Tsistipas was down 2-1 heading into the fourth set.

To add to the drama, Tsitsipas seemed to have repeated a gaffe during his encounter against Benoit Paire when he returned to his marker without realising he had won the match.

Against Paire, Tsitsipas was so focused on each point that he walked back to his return marker and grabbed his towel without realising he had won the match.

While not on match point, the same scenario occurred with Tsitsipas clearly unaware he had won the second set against Fritz on Rod Laver Arena.
