'Bush league': Andrew Bogut's stunning swipe at NBL

Australian basketball legend Andrew Bogut has appeared to take aim at the NBL just a day after announcing his playing future was up in the air.

On Monday, the 35-year-old put basketball fans into a spin when he opted against signing an NBL contract with the Sydney Kings.

Bogut announced the move via social media on Monday, citing uncertainty in global sport amid the coronavirus pandemic as the major reason for his decision.

But the former Golden State Warriors champ took to Twitter on Tuesday and appeared to label the NBL a ‘bush league’ before taking shots at commentator Corey ‘Homicide’ Williams.

Bogut posted a photo and a screen grab from earlier this year appearing to show Williams reporting that the South East Melbourne Phoenix had signed former NBA player Trevor Booker.

The report also claimed Booker would join the ownership group.

The deal never occurred.

The second grab appears to show, an unverified, email from Phoenix owner Romie Chaudhari to Williams.

“Corey, I hope all is well, I’m hoping you can help me with something and in return I’ll give you some inside info,” it reads.

“We are officially announcing that we have signed Trevor Booker as a replacement for Keith Benson for this season and next.

“He’ll also be joining our ownership group. We are really hoping and needing some positive media attention and in turn for giving you this scoop we are hoping that you can report it positively across your channels.

“As you can imagine, happy for you to report but please don’t reference me as your source.

“I really appreciate your help and any questions call or text me … All the best, Romie.”

There is no confirmation the email is real or if the Phoenix ever tried to sign Booker.

Bogut then posted a caption taking a swipe: “Would you see the @NBA or even @EuroLeague have someone who officially works for their brand/league act and rant and rave like @chomicide [Williams]? Of course not. But in @KestelmanLarry [NBL owner] @NBL, perfectly ok. #bushleague.”

But Williams was swift to respond.

He suggest Bogut’s record in the NBL made it far from a ‘bush league’.

Melbourne-born Bogut was the NBA's No.1 draft pick in 2005 and spent more than a decade in the league, winning a championship with Golden State in 2015.

He returned to Australia in 2018 and spent the past two NBL seasons with Sydney, named the league's MVP last year.

Bogut led the Kings to a minor premiership this year before the team pulled out due to coronavirus fears midway through the grand final series, which was awarded to Perth in March.
