Allan Langer's future at the Broncos takes fresh twist as Michael Maguire makes staff call

NSW legend Laurie Daley has questioned Allan Langer's future at the Broncos after he was not mentioned during incoming coach Michael Maguire's changes to the Broncos coaching staff on Thursday. Club legend Langer was reportedly rocked at former coach and good friend Kevin Walters' axing by the Broncos board having won multiple premierships alongside his former teammate.

The former halfback has been working as a Broncos trainer for years and the shock of Walters' sudden departure appears to have left Langer's future in doubt. And his silence throughout the drama is telling. Only last week, Walters skipped the Broncos' presentation night as he and wife Narelle opted against attending the function due to recent events.

His absence has only heightened speculation Langer might decide not to return in the new year for the Broncos under new coach Maguire. Langer is considered part of the furniture at the Broncos with NRL fans accustomed to the legendary halfback running on the field and barking orders at the players.

And it appears Langer is yet to make a decision after the Broncos made a number of announcements under Maguire's leadership. And Langer was not mentioned as a staff member who will remain involved in 2025. Although it also doesn't mean he is leaving.

Maguire's move to retain the coaching staff at the Broncos is a sign he wants to stabilise the club in turmoil having watched their popular head coach depart. The new coach at Red Hill announced Trent Barrett and Ben Te'o would stay in 2025.

Walters appointed Barrett and Te'o to replace Super League-bound John Cartwright and Lee Briers ahead of the 2025 season. And the Broncos have confirmed their appointments will stand under new coach Maguire.

As well as confirming Te'o and Barrett will join him at Red Hill in 2025, Maguire has also added his own touch by hiring high-performance expert Troy Thomson, who worked with the Rabbitohs from 2011-16. Matt Ballin will also remain. Maguire's announcement comes after former Queensland Origin player Darius Boyd departed the Broncos coaching unit.

Despite being sacked after four years as head coach at Brisbane, Walters has been offered an 'ambassador' role at the Broncos. Although skipping the end-of-season event has not boded well for the club.

Reports suggest Langer is torn after Walters' departure. And club legends such as Gorden Tallis have been left frustrated with how Walters was treated ahead of his axing. Club officials insist there's no bad blood with Walters, but Langer's silence could be an indication on what the the atmosphere is like at the club.

NSW legend Daley - a former rival of the Broncos halfback - spoke about Langer's silence at the Broncos in recent weeks and admitted he would have been rocked at Walters' departure. Although Daley admitted Langer would thrive with Maguire and could produce something special at the Broncos.

"I hope he stays. He would be disappointed, but I think he would work well with Maguire," Daley said on Sky Sports Breakfast. "Alf is just part of the fabric and furniture of the place.

"He is someone that is loved. Well-liked universally. It would have knocked him around a bit, but I reckon Alf is someone you need to keep involved at the footy club, it just wouldn't be the same."

Walters and Langer go back a long way in Broncos colours, having won four premierships together in the 1990s during their playing days. Both are proud Queenslanders who have represented their state and the Broncos with pride throughout their careers and Langer's loyalty to Walters has some former Broncos players concerned the club icon could opt to walk away from his role.
