AFL world left devastated after legend rocked by shocking death of son before grand final

The awful news comes just days before the AFL grand final at the MCG.

West Coast Eagles premiership player David Hart has been rocked by the devastating death of his son at just 24. Kye Hart died last Saturday, leaving his family and the AFL community shattered.

Kye was from the Sunshine Coast and attended Sunshine Beach State High School. He had played in the Queensland Australian Football League for the Noosa Tigers.

“We are reaching out to you with heavy hearts and a deep sense of loss," a statement from family member Jess Hart reads on a GoFundMe page set up to help the family. “Our family lost Kye who is a son, brother, uncle, nephew and grandchild. We are absolutely heartbroken and devastated.

“There aren’t enough words to describe how much we love Kye and how much we will miss him. Kye’s love and affection was contagious. His cheeky, beautiful smile would light up any room. Kye had the biggest heart and only wanted to give and help others.

“In this incredibly difficult time we are reaching out for your support to navigate through the challenging times ahead. The funds raised will go towards covering immediate expenses and funeral costs. We are grateful for your kindness, prayers and support through this tragedy.”

Kye's father David played 184 games for West Coast from 1987 to 1997, winning the premiership and earning All-Australian selection in 1994. Hart played in the Eagles' inaugural VFL side in 1987, after also representing West Perth and South Fremantle. In 1996 he was named in West Coast's Team of the Decade, and kicked 95 goals across his 10-year career.

TV icon Jo Beth Taylor, who is family friends with the Harts, wrote on Facebook: "Guys, my beautiful social media family and friends, today I learnt some tragic news. The son of my friend, ex-West Coast Eagles player David Hart … has tragically taken his own life. His name was Kye Hart. Just 24 freaking years old for gods sake!!!

"Enough! When are we going to sort mental health out in this world! Start putting [money] where it’s needed, which is our communities. Please please help if you can. Thank you all in advance."

Words can not describe the loss the family must be going through. Our deepest condolences, love and prayers to you all. I’ll always remember that mischievous grin when the boys were being boys."
