'Look at Eddie's face': Kane Cornes savages 'Collingwood clowns'

Kane Cornes has rubbed salt into Collingwood’s wounds after getting the last laugh in his battle with Pies fans.

The former Port Adelaide player-turned-pundit was made to eat humble pie last week after saying Collingwood was only “making up the numbers” in the finals.

That call backfired spectacularly when the Pies stunned West Coast by a point in their qualifying final clash, and Cornes subsequently apologised.

“Well played Collingwood, what a brilliant football club. #sorry,” he tweeted, before firing off a warning that proved very telling

“Settle down, I got it wrong, but stop celebrating like you've won the premiership,” he said on the Sunday Footy Show.

Flash forward one week and Cornes was in a jovial mood on this week’s episode of the Footy Show after Collingwood were annihilated by Geelong in Saturday night’s semi-final.

The Cats held the Magpies to a record-low one scoring shot in the first half and were never challenged in a 15.10 (100) to 5.2 (32) victory at the Gabba.

And Cornes couldn’t be happier.

“I think they were feeling very confident going into that game with the commentary that they were going to do a lot of damage going forward," he said on Sunday.

“I had a look at Eddie last night and you don't need the scoreboard, all you need is Eddie's face and that tells the score.

“He was up and about last week and sending myself and TJ (Tony Jones) messages all through the week, but nothing from Eddie.

“Not one message, not one tweet, nothing from these Collingwood clowns.”

On Wednesday night McGuire revealed the text message he sent to Cornes after the West Coast game.

“I said, '76 to 75, how about those for making up numbers’,” McGuire said on Footy Classified.

“That's a bit of schoolboy banter. I loved what Kane was saying, I thought the whole year has been an adventure in so many ways.”

Geelong set up prelim clash with Brisbane

Patrick Dangerfield starred in attack as Geelong advanced to a fourth preliminary final in five seasons with a 68-point annihilation of Collingwood.

The result means the top four will fill the preliminary spots for just the second time in the past six seasons, with Geelong to take on second-placed Brisbane.

Dangerfield crashed packs, created scoring opportunities for teammates and kicked four goals himself, including a pair of stunning banana kicks from the boundary line, in an influential display.

He was far from alone, with Cam Guthrie, Sam Menegola, Tom Stewart and Mitch Duncan all on a long list of strong contributors in a dominant performance by the Cats.

Coleman Medal winner Tom Hawkins kicked four goals and captain Joel Selwood had 18 disposals just eight days after finger surgery, while retiring champion Gary Ablett came off the bench to set up two important early goals.

Geelong led by 54 points at half-time and produced staggering numbers by the final siren in winning the contested possession (106-85), uncontested possession (250-110), mark (134-46), clearance (34-21) and inside-50 (46-30) counts.

Geelong had 15 scoring shots to one in the first half, including three that hit the post.

It was just the second time Collingwood had managed only one first-half scoring shot in 2567 VFL-AFL matches, having registered the same tally in the 1960 grand final.
