AFL fans call out 'sloppy' All-Australian photo as unusual details come to light at awards ceremony

The All-Australian team photo certainly raises some eyebrows.

AFL fans could not help but question and share a laugh at the 'sloppy' attire on show in the All-Australian official team photo with a number of players called out for the bizarre choice of clothing. Western Bulldogs champion Marcus Bontempelli was granted the honour of being named as the All-Australian captain on Thursday night as the Sydney Swans led the way with four representatives.

The minor premiers had Errol Gulden, Nick Blakey, Chad Warner and Isaac Heeney all selected in a strong line-up in 2024. And while fans were thrilled to see their favourite players selected for the All-Australian honour, the official photo from the AFL has prompted mixed reactions from the public.

Up to eight players opted not to wear a tie for the photo, while captain Bontempelli drew some hilarious responses for sitting front and centre wearing 'Guinness' socks in the photo. Fans couldn't help but point out a number of players were showing their personality through their attire with the lack of cohesion in the photo a real talking point.

A lack of a tie for several players drew plenty of criticism from fans who even compared the image to that of a 'Year 10 school photo'. Many called for the AFL to present the players with an All-Australian tie in the future to avoid the 'sloppy' presentation. Regardless, fans couldn't help but have their say with Bontempelli's socks a real highlight.

In a slight surprise, Gulden and Collingwood midfield ace Nick Daicos were picked on the wings, which meant there was no room for Hawthorn's Massimo D'Ambrosio. Daicos remains one of the frontrunners to win the Brownlow Medal, alongside Patrick Cripps. There were a few big name absentees with Carlton's Charlie Curnow missing out, while Brisbane Lions co-captain Harris Andrews and Essendon skipper Zach Merrett were also snubbed.

Jacob Weitering finally earned selection having been cut on four previous occasions having made the All-Australian squads. The big story was Western Bulldogs star Adam Treloar earning representation in his 13th season in the AFL.

"It's very humbling and I'm very grateful," Treloar said after the ceremony. "It's cool to be in my 13th season at the ripe old age of 31 and receiving my first All-Australian blazer. It's pretty surreal to be up here with the superstars of the competition."

Treloar will head into the AFL finals on the back of his All-Australian selection and the 253-game midfielder can't wait for another shot at premiership glory. The Bulldogs play an in-form Hawthorn side with an enormous crowd of more than 90,000 expected at the MCG. And the Bulldogs leader admitted he was relishing the challenge.

"It's the reason why you play the game," Treloar said. "I've been around long enough and been a part of finals campaigns where you know how hard it is to actually get there.

"It's a whole new ball game now and I'm really looking forward to the opportunity to play in front of a sell-out crowd against arguably the in-form team of the competition. It's going to be a great challenge for us but one we're really looking forward to."
