Dustin Martin's father kicked out of Australia in fresh deportation drama

Dustin Martin’s father has been sent back to New Zealand after trying to enter Australia.

Shane Martin, father of Richmond AFL superstar Dustin, flew into Sydney on Sunday accompanied by a lawyer in an attempt to enter the country.

The former bikie boss had previously been deported from Australia but tried to come back after a High Court decision that people of Indigenous heritage can’t be deported.

Martin is claiming to have an Aboriginal grandmother in Tasmania.

However he was detained by Border Force officers and sent back to New Zealand on Monday.

"Part of the reason that we kick out people with severe criminal histories, like Mr Martin, is we want to make sure that people don't commit crimes again in our country," Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton told the Nine Network on Tuesday.

"I think he's got a spurious claim but that is a claim for him to put.”

Martin used to be a senior member of the Rebels bikie gang and was deported from Australia in 2016 on character grounds.

Mr Dutton is confident the court decision won't create an avenue for the father of Richmond's Brownlow medallist to return.

"We have now cancelled the visas of about 5000 people, many of them involved in outlaw motorcycle gangs, who are the biggest distributors of amphetamines, ice in our country, destroying lives," the minister said.

"It's a very clear message that if you come to our country as a Kiwi, a US citizen, as citizen of anywhere else in the world and you commit crimes in our country, you can expect to be deported."

Martin previously renounced his connection to the Rebels and bemoaned his inability to live in Australia.

“They respect what I'm fighting for and vice versa. It shits me that you can't keep in contact with people who have been a big part of your life,” Martin said.

“I met some really good, respectful people, I don't regret it. It sort of annoys me how people look down on bikies, or clubbies. They do have morals, respect and loyalty.”

Dustin Martin used a post-grand final interview in September to send a shout-out to his father, who was forced to watch his son win a second Norm Smith medal from New Zealand.

After winning his first Norm Smith medal in 2017, when the Tigers demolished the Adelaide Crows, Martin once again dominated the MCG on the biggest day in September.

Speaking to former Richmond star turned Channel 7 commentator Matthew Richardson after the final siren, Martin sent a shout-out to his dad and pumped up first-gamer Marlion Pickett.

“The club has given him (Pickett) a second chance,” Martin told Richardson.

“People make mistakes, I could not have been prouder of the club taking a chance on him.

“And super proud of him for putting his head down and it (his goal) was pretty sweet, wasn’t it?

“And I just want to say g’day to dad in New Zealand — I love ya mate.”
