AFL rocked by second drink driving scandal in 24 hours

Adelaide Crows forward Tyson Stengle has been caught drink-driving in an unregistered car, allegedly recording a blood-alcohol reading more than double the legal limit.

Stengle, 21, was pulled over by police in Adelaide’s south-west suburbs and reportedly recorded a blood alcohol reading of .125.

In a statement published on the Adelaide Crows website, club head of football Adam Kelly said Stengle’s actions constituted a ‘serious’ breach of club and community standards.

“Tyson is deeply remorseful and embarrassed by his actions, and we have expressed our disappointment in his decision making,” Kelly said.

“Fortunately, no one was hurt and he will receive appropriate education so he learns from this mistake.

“Tyson is a valued member of the Crows family and we will continue to support him through this difficult period.”

The club statement went on to add that any criminal sanctions Stengle would face would also be accompanied by club-imposed sanctions, to be decided by Crows management.

Stengle played four games for the Crows in 2019 as well as round one in 2020, following time with the Richmond Tigers in the VFL.

Second drink-driving incident in 24 hours to rock AFL

Stengles’ drink driving charge comes on the same day Western Bulldogs vice-captain Lachie Hunter was embroiled in a drink driving scandal of his own.

Hunter is set to be charged over the alleged incident, where he is accused of hitting four parked cars while more than two times over the legal blood alcohol limit.

Police say they arrived just before 9pm on Thursday night to the Middle Park scene, in inner Melbourne, where an SUV owned by Hunter appeared to have crashed into four other cars.

It was later revealed that two of Hunter’s teammates, Billy Gowers and Bailey Smith, were also involved.

Smith was understood to have driven Hunter to Gowers' South Yarra home.

Victoria Police on Friday said a Middle Park man was given a preliminary breath test and a subsequent evidentiary breath test, returning a reading of 0.123.

He will be charged on summons with drink driving and other traffic matters.

Police also found him in breach of the coronavirus restrictions and fined him $1652.

“We found out about the incident in the last couple of hours and we'll obviously take the time to investigate it,” the AFL club's president Peter Gordon told SEN radio on Friday.

“Football is very prominent in people's lives ... but this isn't the message we want to send out there.”
