SPOTTED: $40 Sydney to Melbourne flights

Sydney to Melbourne is one of the busiest air routes in the world, and as such dirt cheap tickets do not come around often.

But Australian budget airline Jetstar is currently having a sale in which seats between Sydney and Melbourne are going for as low as $40 one way.

The usual caveat for budget airlines apply: check-in luggage will be extra, and the airline will strictly enforce the 7kg carry-on limit. Food will also have an additional cost.

And the flight coming from Sydney will land at Avalon Airport, which is a lot further from Melbourne city (56km) than Tullamarine Airport (23km), meaning ground transport could be more expensive.

Normally Sydney to Melbourne flights can cost from $100 one-way to as much as several hundred during peak times like Monday mornings and Friday afternoons.

There is a reasonable window of flights available for the $40 price, with such seats spotted between the start of May and until the end of June, which is the last week of the Victorian school term.

Yahoo Finance confirmed that $40 seats were still on sale as of Friday lunchtime.

Some other flights out of Sydney that Jetstar has on sale currently include $111 one-way to Uluru, $119 one-way to Darwin, and $229 one-way to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
