Rare $2 Olympics coins revealed for Woolworths shoppers: ‘Limited edition’

Four coins commemorating the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games will be available for Woolworths customers from Wednesday.

New $2 coins celebrating the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games have been unveiled by Woolworths and the Royal Australian Mint today. The limited edition coins will be available exclusively to Woolies customers who shop in cash.

From Wednesday, July 17, Woolworths customers shopping in-store will have the chance to collect four $2 coins in their change. A new coin will be released every two weeks.

The ‘Community’ coin will be the first released this week. It features the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) logo.

The ‘Allezaus’ coin refers to the popular European sports chant ‘Allez’ meaning ‘Let’s Go’. It features the team mascot, BK the Kangaroo, breakdancing, which is a new sport in the Paris Olympics.

The ‘Olympism’ coin features a Parisian Boxing Kangaroo, while the final ‘Paralympics’ coin features the team mascot, Lizzie the frill-necked lizard, playing the sport of Goalball.

Woolworths Group chief marketing officer Andrew Hicks said the supermarket giant had a “long and proud” partnership with the Mint.

“These limited edition coins are just one of the many ways Woolworths, as the official fresh food partner of the Australian Olympic and Paralympic teams, is helping customers show their support for our athletes as they compete in Paris,” Hicks said.

Mint CEO Leigh Gordon said the Mint was proud to honour the Australian Olympic and Paralympic teams with dedicated coins.

“These keepsakes will be treasured for years to come, and will serve as a reminder of the sense of pride and achievement we have in our athletes,” Gordon said.

Despite the limited edition coins not even being released to the public yet, some people are already trying to capitalise on them.

One eBay seller has advertised the coins for $56.99 each or $45.59 for two, while another has advertised the coins for $79 for the full set subject to supply issues.

You'll have a chance to get the coins when shopping in-store and paying in cash at Woolworths.
