The Royal Wedding, Thai cave rescue and the World Cup aside, 2018 was a massive year for money news.

Bitcoin claimed more devotees while the Royal Commission into the banks scared the bejesus out of others.

Then there was the country’s slowing property market and warnings negative gearing changes would trigger a “nuclear bomb” in the sector.

It’s been a big year.

Here’s what Aussies wanted to know about money this year.

Coinspot

The most-searched finance topic, Coinspot is a platform on which cryptocurrency traders can trade Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dogecoin and more.

Bitcoin

Bitcoin price: It changes all the time! Looking at Bitcoin’s price changes over the year is akin to looking at a rollercoaster, so no wonder we were all frantically googling the latest updates.

How to buy: It looked like so much fun, a lot of us were keen to buy in. “How to buy bitcoin” was the sixth most-searched term this year.

What is it: But a lot of us didn’t really know what Bitcoin was. “What is bitcoin” was the most-searched “what is” question, followed by “What is listeria”.

“What is blockchain” also made the top-10 “what is” questions, sandwiched between “What is Diwali” and “What is ball tampering”.

Luckily we answered that question.

My Health Record

“How to opt out of my health record…” was the most-searched how to question of all categories, and My Health Record also rated as one of the most-searched topics.

My Health Record is an online summary of your health history. It’s held by the government, and is designed to assist GPs, dentists, pharmacists and insurers in having access to this information in one spot.

It sounds great, but privacy-conscious Australians were concerned about the volume of data shared and security of the system.

People

Australians were fascinated by politicians, namely Barnaby Joyce, Scott Morrison and Peter Dutton. Malcolm Turnbull, who was Prime Minister for the first half of the year didn’t make the top 10.

Events

Election-mania. We went nuts for news about the US midterm elections and the Wentworth by-election.

In fact, the latter was the most-searched event after the Royal Wedding and the Thai cave rescue.

Retail

“What is open on Good Friday” was one of the most searched question, implying Australians are terrible at preparing the Easter Sunday feast in advance.

Tech

“Why is my internet so slow” was frequently searched, as was “How to screenshot on iPhone X”.

Now I’m curious: what else were we searching?

These were the top 10 most-searched topics in 2018:

  1. World Cup

  2. Commonwealth Games

  3. Meghan Markle

  4. Avicii

  5. Coinspot

  6. Anthony Bourdain

  7. US Open Tennis

  8. Mac Miller

  9. Bitcoin price

  10. Black Panther
