Fastest-growing suburbs in Australia revealed
Aussies are flocking out of inner-city suburbs in search of more affordable housing.
Australia added more than 1 million new residents since December 2019, despite pandemic-induced border closures, with some suburbs getting a bigger boost than others.
A new report from KPMG Australia found Aussies continued flocking to “greenfield” suburbs, with the fastest-growing areas being suburbs where free-standing houses were more common.
Nearly a quarter of the 1 million new residents settled in one of the top 10 fastest-growing areas, KPMG demographics expert Terry Rawnsley said.

Wyndham in Victoria was the fastest-growing area between 2019 and 2022, with 34,500 additional residents. Wyndham covers almost 20 suburbs containing a significant number of greenfield developments.
“Significant road and rail investments over the past 20 years, combined with development-ready land has resulted in strong population growth,” Rawnsley said.
Greenfields are former rural land areas that are being developed for housing - typically detached houses.
