Yahoo Finance Fake tax agent charged over $145,000 refund theft
A Sydney man has been arrested and charged with offences relating to pretending to be a qualified tax agent and defrauding customers of their refunds.
The 33-year-old, who was arrested during a raid on a Mt Druitt home on Thursday morning, is accused of stealing more than $145,000.
The man is not a registered tax agent but police allege he charged several customers $100 to do their returns, then pocketed the refund many times over.
Most of his victims were taxpayers that were in Australia on working holidays.
The accused has been then charged with two counts relating to dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception and identity theft.
He was granted bail to appear at Mt Druitt Local Court on August 7.
Detectives had been working on the case since March, with the assistance of the Australian Taxation Office.
